What every approved class must cover

California sets the curriculum. Any Secretary of State approved vendor teaches the same material: notarial acts, identification standards, fees, journal and seal rules, and the laws behind them. A Proof of Completion from one approved vendor is worth exactly the same as any other when you sit the exam.

If a provider is approved, the required content is not the differentiator. Price, delivery and what comes with it are.

Price

The six-hour California class ranges from roughly $40 to $199. The National Notary Association charges $199 for its online course. Community college seminars usually run $100 to $130 plus materials. Ours is $79.

Cheapest is not automatically best. Some low-priced courses are text slideshows with a quiz at the end. That is legal, and a poor way to prepare for a precisely worded written exam.

Common questions

Does it matter which approved vendor I choose?
Not for eligibility. Every approved vendor issues a Proof of Completion the state accepts. It matters for how well prepared you are on exam day.
Is the cheapest class good enough?
It can be, if it prepares you properly. Check whether practice tests are included, because that is what people pass on.
Can I take the class online in California?
Yes. The education may be completed online through an approved vendor. The exam itself must be taken in person.
How do I know a provider is approved?
Approved vendors have a number issued by the Secretary of State and state it openly. Ours is #607272.
