Notary Test
Now that you’ve completed your training, it’s time to prepare for your California Notary Exam. We’ll walk you through scheduling your exam, what to expect, and how to pass with confidence.
Background Check
The next step is completing your Live Scan fingerprinting background check. We recommend visiting a local police station, since many offer walk-in services at lower prices than online appointment services. Be sure to bring your application form with you.
State Processing (6-8 weeks)
After your Exam and Live Scan fingerprinting, the California Secretary of State will process your application and mail your official notary packet. This step typically takes 6–8 weeks, so don’t worry if it feels slow — that’s completely normal.
Notary Supplies, Bond & E/O
Once your packet arrives from the Secretary of State, you’ll be ready to activate your notary supplies and complete your bond and E&O insurance requirements.
This is one of the final steps before becoming an officially commissioned California notary.
File Your Oath & Bond
You’re almost there! After receiving bond, the final step is to file your oath and bond with your county clerk’s office.
California requires this to be completed within 30 days of your commission commencement date, which is listed on your commission paperwork.
Contact your local county clerk’s office to schedule an appointment, then bring your commission paperwork and bond with you.
Once your oath is filed, 🎉 Congratulations — you’re officially a California notary public!
